BUT-art: Noxious Weeds

Exhibition
Noxious Weeds

Curated and supported by KOP (Kunstenaars Ontwikkel Platform). As a ‘kick-starter for art and design talent towards a professional practice’, Breda’s KOP focuses on mentoring programmes for its own art projects and as a co-producer, whereby they enter into partnerships specifically in the area of talent development. Every year, KOP joins the BUT Film Festival to realise the art program. For this edition, KOP is mentoring Roeland Rooijakkers to curate the exhibition.

Noxious Weeds - Art Exhibition

Weeds!!! No one wants that in their garden, do they? Not if it is up to Roeland Rooijakkers, young artist and curator of the upcoming art exhibition Noxious Weeds.

Roeland invited four other artists to exhibit during the annual BUT Film Festival in Breda, as an ode to all the wild plants we have labelled as weeds. The artworks of Sarah Fokke, Carmen van Beem, Jessica van Egmond, Lieve van den Bijgaart and Roeland Rooijakkers can be seen overgrown at four participating locations of BUT Film Festival, including De Nieuwe Veste, Chassé Cinema, Filmhuis Breda and café het Hijgend Hert.

The exhibition Noxious Weeds was created in response to BUTFF 2024’s theme of “Rebel Hell!” Weeds, according to Roeland, are nature’s symbol of resistance and rebellion. They burst right through our human established frameworks and are indestructible. “Weeds do not perish,” is not only a well-known saying, it’s the truth! Each participating artist has their own take on the theme of weeds within the exhibition.
